Longevity Founders to Watch: The People Building the Field Beyond Bryan Johnson
The investors, lab founders, clinicians and advocates shaping the science of aging, and an honest look at where the evidence holds up.
Bryan Johnson turned self-experimentation into a media franchise, but he is one figure in a field that now runs on billions of dollars and decades of laboratory work. Altos Labs alone launched in 2022 with roughly $3 billion in committed funding, one of the largest debuts in biotech history, according to Fierce Biotech. Behind that money sits a cohort of investors, scientists, clinicians and advocates with very different track records. Some run rigorous trials. Some sell services that outpace the published evidence. This is a guide to the people worth watching, and an honest account of where the science is solid and where it is still a promise.
Peter Diamandis and the diagnostics push
Peter Diamandis, the entrepreneur behind the XPRIZE Foundation, co-founded the longevity clinic company Fountain Life with Tony Robbins and Dr. William Kapp. The pitch is preventive diagnostics: whole-body MRI, advanced blood panels and AI-driven analysis aimed at catching disease before symptoms appear. In August 2025 the company raised an $18 million Series B, TechCrunch reported, with membership packages that run into five figures per year. The diagnostic case is real for some cancers and cardiovascular disease, but the broader claim that aggressive scanning extends lifespan in healthy adults remains unproven, and full-body imaging carries a known risk of false positives. Aubrey de Grey and the mouse experiments
Aubrey de Grey has argued for decades that aging is an engineering problem. His nonprofit, the LEV Foundation, runs the Robust Mouse Rejuvenation program, which combines interventions rather than testing them one at a time. The foundation’s first study (RMR1) layered four treatments: the drug rapamycin, the senolytic navitoclax, an AAV gene therapy expressing telomerase, and a hematopoietic stem cell transplant, per the LEV Foundation’s study page. Coverage of the early results, including by Longevity.Technology, described additive but modest lifespan gains in middle-aged mice, on the order of a few months. De Grey says a larger second study is underway. The work is unusual for testing combinations, but mouse results have a long history of failing to translate to humans, and his public timelines remain far more optimistic than the data.
Liz Parrish and gene therapy outside the clinic
Elizabeth Parrish, CEO of BioViva, became the first person to take an experimental gene therapy explicitly aimed at aging when she received telomerase and follistatin treatments in 2015. Her Wikipedia profile and reporting by The Niche note that BioViva offers therapies abroad, in jurisdictions such as the Bahamas, because they are not approved in the United States. Parrish presents her own case as a decade-long data set. The caution here is significant: there is no peer-reviewed, controlled evidence that these therapies extend human lifespan, a single self-experiment cannot establish safety or efficacy, and medical tourism for unapproved gene therapy carries real risk.
Nir Barzilai and the trial that targets aging itself
Nir Barzilai of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine is the driving force behind TAME, the Targeting Aging with Metformin trial. Its significance is regulatory as much as scientific: it is designed to test whether an inexpensive generic drug can delay multiple age-related diseases at once, and to push the FDA toward treating aging as a target. As the American Federation for Aging Research explains, the trial has long struggled to raise its full budget, reported in the range of $45 million to $75 million, precisely because metformin is off-patent and offers no profit incentive to drug companies. TAME is the credible mainstream test of pharmaceutical longevity, but as of recent reporting it remained only partially funded. David Sinclair and the hype problem
David Sinclair, the Harvard geneticist, is among the field’s most famous names and its most cautionary. In March 2024 he stepped down as president of the Academy for Health and Lifespan Research after a company he co-founded, Animal Bioscience, issued a press release quoting him as saying a supplement had been “proven to reverse aging” in dogs. As STAT reported, there was no published research demonstrating that claim, and the backlash from fellow researchers was severe. His earlier work on resveratrol and sirtuins also drew lasting scientific disputes about whether the compound activates sirtuins at all. Sinclair remains a serious researcher and continues to publish, but his commercial claims are a reminder that fame and evidence are not the same thing.
Eric Verdin and the academic anchor
Eric Verdin has led the Buck Institute for Research on Aging as president and CEO since 2016, according to the Buck Institute. The Buck is a rare independent research institution focused entirely on the biology of aging, and Verdin’s own lab studies metabolism, ketone bodies and immune aging. He represents the part of the field that publishes peer-reviewed science and trains researchers rather than selling memberships. Voices like his matter because they keep the conversation tethered to data when marketing runs ahead of it.
Joon Yun and prize-driven research
Joon Yun, a physician and managing partner of the healthcare hedge fund Palo Alto Investors, created the $1 million Palo Alto Longevity Prize in 2014. As his Wikipedia entry and the prize’s own materials describe, the competition split its purse between restoring “homeostatic capacity” in an aging mammal and extending lifespan by half. Yun is an example of the investor-advocate who tries to pull research forward with incentives. Prizes can focus attention, though they rarely substitute for the sustained funding that long studies require.
The reprogramming giants: Altos and Retro
The biggest bets are on cellular reprogramming, the idea of partially resetting a cell’s age using the Yamanaka factors. Altos Labs, founded by Rick Klausner, Hans Bishop and Yuri Milner with backing reportedly including Jeff Bezos, recruited Nobel laureate Shinya Yamanaka as an unpaid senior adviser, per Scientific American. It now employs hundreds of scientists. Retro Biosciences, led by Joe Betts-LaCroix and backed by OpenAI’s Sam Altman, is pursuing reprogramming, plasma-inspired therapeutics and autophagy, and was reported by Longevity.Technology to be raising around $1 billion with a goal of adding ten years of healthy life. The science is genuinely exciting and genuinely early: reprogramming has rejuvenated cells and tissues in animals, but turning that into a safe human therapy, without raising cancer risk, is unsolved.

Is any of this available as a proven treatment today? No. Diagnostics and lifestyle medicine are real, and some repurposed drugs are in trials, but no therapy has been proven to extend healthy human lifespan. Most aggressive interventions remain experimental.
Who in the field is most evidence-driven? Academic figures such as Nir Barzilai and Eric Verdin, who run trials and publish peer-reviewed work, tend to make narrower claims than founders selling consumer products or therapies offered outside regulatory approval.
Why is so much money flowing into reprogramming? Partial cellular reprogramming has reversed signs of aging in animal studies, which makes it the field’s most ambitious approach. The catch is that human safety, especially cancer risk, has not been established.
